About this Program
The medical coding specialist examines medical records and assigns codes to procedures and diagnoses. The coder transforms verbal descriptions of disease, injury, and procedures into a numerical system. This coding system is universally recognized and provides information for reimbursement of health care claims, health statistics, and research. The Medical Coding Specialist program is a three-semester program. This program is recognized as a Comprehensive Coding Program by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Students will become familiar with anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, diagnostic and procedural terminology, pharmacology, diagnostic laboratory tests, medical office procedures, and medical finance. Students will be instructed in the analysis of medical records and assigning of codes for indexing diagnoses and procedures to provide information for reimbursement purposes. There is an emphasis on completeness, accuracy, quality, confidentiality, and ethics. After completion of this program, students will possess the necessary skills to perform Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), as well as International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) medical coding functions. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible for certification as a Coding Associate through AHIMA. With some experience, they will become eligible for additional national certification examinations through AHIMA or the American Academy of Professional Coders.
