About this Program

Health information technicians compile, organize and manage health information data. They ensure its quality, accuracy, accessibility and security in both paper and electronic systems. They use various classification systems to code and categorize patient information for reimbursement purposes, databases and registries, and maintain patients´┐Ż medical and treatment histories with electronic health record systems. Health Information specialists also maintain proper procedures for release of health information, gather statistics for research purposes, and interpret health coding data. Graduates are able to work in a variety of allied health-related facilities including: hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, government agencies, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, etc. Ridgewater students are required to complete two (2) on-the-job internships (practicums) while enrolled. Coursework includes working with computers and specialized computer software/programs. After completing the program, students will be able to take the National Certification Examination from the American Health Information Management Association and, if successful, become a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
